How to Start a Home-Based Perfume Business

Here’s some helpful information to get you started, and you can find a lot more on the internet.

Perfumes must have an aromatic component that can be natural, such as a flower extract, extracts of various plant materials or essential oils. Or it could be synthetic, as found in most of the more affordable perfumes on sale today.

Perfume fragrances don’t need to be made from scratch. If you want to start a home-based perfume business, it is much easier to purchase a fragrance from a perfumery supply company. There is a very wide variety available.

This fragrance base must be diluted to be most useful. Undiluted, it will be difficult to apply, too harsh, and may even irritate the skin. Therefore, the fragrance must be diluted with an appropriate solvent. Typically dilution ratios of 10% to 20% fragrance (90% to 80% solvent) are used. To make an oil-based perfume, the perfume must be diluted with an oil that does not have a fragrance of its own. This is usually jojoba oil. Oil-based perfumes are not normally sprayed. They rub or roll.

In the most common types of perfumes, the fragrance is diluted with a solvent that is primarily ethyl alcohol. This makes the perfume very easy to spray using a spray pump and the alcohol evaporates on the skin, leaving the fragrance behind. If you are starting a business, this solvent can be purchased from the perfumery supply company where you purchased the fragrance. The solvent will usually have a few other ingredients in addition to the alcohol to make it work better. Once you have mixed the fragrance with the alcohol solvent, it should be left in for at least 48 hours or more before bottling. If there is a sediment, it can be filtered in a coffee filter.

If you want to sell your perfume successfully, the packaging and appearance of the perfume bottles are just as important as the fragrance. Take your time choosing the bottles and designing the labeling. The quality of the atomizing pump is essential so that the user does not experience any difficulties. Most first-time perfume packers use screw cap atomizers, but they quickly discover that some of the bottles are leaking and then go on to crimp pumps. Atomizing crimp bottles and pumps are available from many suppliers and can also be imported at a fairly low price, although care must be taken with the quality. Stick to the 15mm FEA neck finish to get started. It looks good and is the most common size. The next challenge is finding an affordable crimper that produces a high-quality crimp finish and seals the bottle properly.
