If you are asking this question, the quick answer is no. That’s how it is.
By now, you may have realized that there is no central governing board or certification process for life or business coaches. There is no government agency that issues licenses. There is no state accreditation process.
Although there are both small and large coaching organizations and associations, an official licensing process is not required before starting. So again, the short answer is that you don’t need to have a Certificate. In fact, you could hang out as a personal or business trainer and get started today.
Now that we have the “Is a Life Coaching Certificate Required?” question addressed … let me suggest a new and more important question to ask:
“What does it take to become an effective and successful life or business coach?”
There are many different angles to taking this question, but I am going to answer it in a way that seems too simple but is wildly true. Since you don’t need an official certificate or license to be a life coach, the real test for a coach is … are they really good at what they do?
Nobody cares where you got your coaching certificate from.
It is true. Of the hundreds of people I have trained, only a handful have asked me if I have a certificate. And even when they did, they just wanted a simple “yes or no” answer. (And I can also say that our elite life coach certification graduates have had a similar experience.) Why? Because … your potential coaching clients don’t really care if they are “certified” or not. They do not do it.
They only care if you are an excellent coach.
They care if you can help them achieve the things they want to achieve. They want to know if you can help them discover the things that are buried deep within them. They want to know if they can feel safe and encouraged working with you. They want to know if they will really feel heard. They want to know that their lives will be dramatically impacted by working with you. That is what they want to know.
So again, you don’t need to have a coach certificate to be a life coach.
You just have to be really good at it.
As a result … when it all comes down to it … although a sheet of paper that says “Life Coaching Certificate” at the top is not required, you do want to choose a process that will prepare you to be an excellent life coach or of business.
You want to find a process that, in addition to your Life Coach Certificate, helps you:
Know your role and help define clearly how you add value to your customers
Ask your customers powerful questions to help them discover and own your solutions.
Be confident in a training process so that you can train anyone of any background with incredible confidence.
Assess your strengths and learn how to build a tremendously successful training practice on those strengths
Develop a marketing plan that will allow you to launch your coaching practice and successfully connect with your target market.
Learn how to handle the logistics of a coaching practice so you can build your business with confidence.
Continue to grow as a coach … even as your practice continues to grow and flourish.
So … do you need a Life Coaching Certificate to train? No. You just have to be an incredibly amazing life coach.
You can do it? We believe you can … especially if you intentionally choose a proven process that will help you prepare and achieve!
