PS4 V Xbox One – Hardware Comparison

One question that potential console buyers will ask themselves many times over the next few years is which is the best console, the Sony PlayStation 4 or the Microsoft Xbox One? In this article we take a look at the technical details of each console and compare them with each other.

PS4 v Xbox One – CPU

At the heart of any gaming console is its processor. It is responsible for the raw power of the drive, at the same time that it ties together all the other components such as the RAM, the hard drive, the graphics chip, and the optical drive.

This principle also applies to PC versions of games because the CPU used is a PC-derived x86 architecture, while the graphics processing is also PC-based.

Both consoles use an Accelerated Processing Unit (or APU) configuration. This system has both the CPU and the GPU (graphics processing unit) contained in one chip. These next-generation consoles use AMD’s third-generation lower-powered APU architecture.

Xbox One v PS4 – Graphics Processing

Both consoles use an AMD GPU based on the Radeon HD 7000 series of graphics cards for personal computers. Despite this, there are differences between the two. On paper, the PS4’s graphics processor is 40% more powerful with 1,152 shader processors enabling 1.84 teraflops throughput compared to the Xbox One’s 768 shader processors, giving it a performance of 1.31 teraflops. In an attempt to counteract this deficit, Microsoft decided to increase its GPU’s pre-launch speed from the standard 800MHz used by the HD 7000 chip to 853MHz. This small increase in clock speed is unlikely to offer a noticeable improvement with the additional processing power of the PS4 allowing you to perform more tasks simultaneously, theoretically allowing for more impressive visuals.

Xbox One v PlayStation 4 – RAM

Sony’s console also outperforms the Xbox in the random access memory (RAM) specification, with the PlayStation4 using GDDR5 RAM, while the One has more conventional DDR3 memory. Both units have 8GB of RAM.

GDDR5 RAM is designed for use in intensive applications like graphics cards because it has a much higher bandwidth of up to 100GB / sec more than DDR3. To counteract this deficit, the Xbox One also has a 32MB eSRAM frame buffer to help bridge the gap between the two types of RAM.

With a more powerful GPU and faster memory, the PS4 appears to marginally outperform the Xbox in sheer graphics power. Despite these advantages, Microsoft’s product returns with a slightly faster processor (around 10 percent) and the addition of an eSRAM buffer to release the load on the Xbox One’s main memory.
