Types of bathtubs

A bathtub is a bathtub. Or is that it? Sure they all allow you to come in and relax, they all have a water feature and they all share a common purpose, but, as with most things, there are different styles of bathtubs. Which one is right for your new bathroom?

A freestanding bathtub has an air of antiquity. They may or may not have claw feet, which only adds to their charm, and they look heavy and sturdy – just what you need for a good long bath. What makes freestanding bathtubs different is that they are not surrounded by walls. They are freestanding, which means that if you have your heart set on this type of bathtub, you need to make sure you have enough space in the bathroom for it. It gives you freedom, it gives you grace, and it gives you exposed plumbing that you can beautify at will.

The alcove bathtub is the one we see the most. It is the easiest option and usually the cheapest, as it allows the bathtub to fit between three walls. If you choose tile or a frame for the bathtub, you can also easily have a bathtub / shower combination that is ideal for all members of the family. Yes, they look utilitarian, but they get the job done, they’re clean, and the plumbing is hidden from view.

The combination of the alcove and freestanding bathtub design is the introduction. This type of bathtub is freestanding but in a box similar to a platform that covers it on all sides. The tub is then dropped into the box and voila, you have your tub. You will need a lot of floor space for this type of bathtub, but the finished product is very pleasing to the eye and of course functional. Again, you can hide all the plumbing parts in the deck for a perfect look.

If you want your bathroom to reflect a luxurious spa, you will want to go crazy and get a corner bathtub. These triangular affairs offer bathing for more than one person at a time and are usually jetted to add to the luxurious look. Yes, they take up a lot of floor space and yes, they take a long time to fill, but who cares? Once you’re inside, you won’t think about any of that anyway.

So what will it be for your next bathroom makeover?
