What happens if a package is lost in transit?

At the end of the day, package deliveries should be a no-brainer. You hire a courier to collect your package and deliver it to your customer, and 99.9% of the time your packages are delivered on time and to the correct address. However, in a small number of cases, your package can disappear, either temporarily or permanently.

If this happens, it can be a very tense day, with endless phone calls to find out where your customers’ package has arrived. Stress can be added if your courier has outsourced any of the delivery services.

In most cases, your property will be found, but in a few cases your property may end up being permanently lost, so if this happens, what do you do and who is responsible?

Well, first of all, you should always make sure that the products you are shipping are adequately covered by package courier insurance. If not, for example, if you shipped three thousand pounds worth of goods and your parcel courier insurance only covered you up to the value of one thousand pounds, then you would be responsible for the difference.

The reason for this is that by sending a package, by default you will have accepted the terms and conditions of the courier services. When picking up a package, it is your responsibility and not theirs to ensure that the package is properly insured. The parcel courier will seldom ask what the goods in the parcel are, as you do not need to know.

So it’s worth checking your package courier contract to see who is responsible for what, in the unfortunate event that a package gets lost in transit.
