5 Cool Things to Do at Garner State Park This Winter

By admin Jul11,2023

Once the first arctic fronts dissipate the heat of the brutal Texas summer, vacation options begin to change dramatically. As the seasons change, so does the weather and the places that are best to visit. Yet one place remains as enchanting and beautiful as ever. With an abundance of wildlife, natural beauty, and luckily for adventurers, fewer crowds of people, Garner State Park is the perfect place for a winter getaway. Here are 5 cool things you can do there this winter.

1. Stay inside

Renting a cozy cabin in the winter isn’t always about simply having a place to sleep for the night after a day of adventures. The cabin itself can be used to relax, unwind, and spend time with family and friends. Sometimes, during an exceptionally cold day, it’s better to stay indoors and relax by the fire watching a good movie or reading an exciting book. Garner State Park has single-family cabins and cabin rentals for families or larger groups available.

2.Hiking

Even during the winter, Texas is still beautiful. The cooler temperatures are perfect for spending a day exploring the trails. In this state park, there are plenty of trails to explore and different species of wildlife to see during the winter. Those with more experience can choose hiking trails that offer steeper and more challenging inclines. The Frio Canyon Trail is 2.8 miles and there are also shorter trails like the Blinn River Trail that follows the river and is only .5 miles.

3. Canoeing

Even during the winter, the Frio River is available for a fun canoe trip. The colder temperatures lend themselves to some safety precautions, but during the regular cold Texas winter days, the extra peace and quiet of the season is perfect for a canoeing adventure. Pack a picnic lunch and hit the river at one of the many spots. Kayak and canoe rentals are available through many different vendors, or bring your own!

4. Relax

Winter is the quietest time to rent a cabin and/or camp. There are fewer families and the park is generally less crowded. Enjoy some peace and quiet and relax outside by the fire. BBQ, tell stories and make some smores. As long as you plan ahead for severe weather, cooler temperatures will be refreshing.

5. Outdoor Camp

Unless a cold front is arriving or there is a strong possibility of sleet, ice, or snow, camping is an option year-round in the park. Plan ahead and be sure to bring electric blankets, wood for the fire, and any other necessities to stay warm in the dead of night.

Even during the winter, there are plenty of things to do at this Texas state park. Bring your gear and a sense of adventure and escape.
