Located at the foot of the southern Sierra Nevada ski slope
spa, Granada is one of the most splendid cities in
Eastern Andalusia.
On its southern side there are 103 km of fabulous Mediterranean
coastline, with the Costa del Sol and the Costa Tropical in
proximity while, in the middle, lies a fertile plain
production of exotic fruits.
Granada dates back to prehistoric times and was known as
Ilbyr. When the Romans colonized the southern part of
Iberia, they built their own city there, calling it
illibris. The Arabs, invading the Peninsula in the
8th century, gave the city its current name of Granada.
Being the last Muslim city in Spain to be reconquered by
Christians, Granada has an unmistakable Arab flavor,
and Moorish and Christian elements go hand in hand.
One of Granada’s brightest jewels is the Alhambra,
a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nasrids
Dynasty in the fourteenth century. This powerful compound
of buildings, including the summer palace called the Generalife
with its beautiful fountains and gardens, is located at the foot
from Sierra Nevada.
The hill in front of the Alhambra is the old Moorish casbah o
called medina of the albaicin. One of the oldest neighborhoods,
It has been declared a World Heritage Site, along with the
Alhambra and Generalife.
The Plaza de San Nicolás, at the highest point of the
Albaicín, is famous for its magnificent view of the Moors
Palace.
The Sacromonte hill, which dominates the city from the north,
it is famous for its cave dwellings, once home to a great gypsy
community. Here you can find some of the best flamingos
Shows in Andalusia.
Perhaps the most important Christian monument in Granada is
Cathedral. Built in 1523, Queen Elizabeth and King
Fernando are buried there in the Royal Chapel.
Among the museums worth visiting are the Museum of Art in the
Carlos V Palace in the Alhambra, Alhambra Museum,
the Cathedral Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the
Science Museum.
If the children get a little bored of sightseeing,
they will simply love the activities available nearby
Sierra Nevada ski resort or the beautiful beaches not too much
far. And you too!
So… come visit Granada and have fun like never before!
