An electric generator is a machine that produces electrical energy for use in homes, shops and offices. It operates based on the principle of electromagnetic induction discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831. This principle states that by passing electricity through a conductor such as a wire placed next to a magnet, a current is induced in the wire. The generator, in turn, uses the mechanical energy produced by its engine to force the movement of these electric charges through an external electrical circuit.

There are many types of generators available on the market based on their size, type of fuel and power output. Portable generators, for example, are designed to be easily transported and can power a few appliances at a time in case of a power outage. Industrial generators are larger and can provide large amounts of power for factories or construction sites.

The basic structure of a generator is comprised of the engine, a rotating shaft, an electromagnet and copper wiring. The frame of the generator protects the moving parts and keeps dirt and moisture out. The engine, which is powered by diesel fuel, gasoline, propane gas or natural gas, provides the mechanical energy to spin the armature of the electromagnet. This process creates alternating current that reverses its polarity at a specific frequency (usually 50 or 60 hertz) and thus supplies electric power to the generator.

A voltage regulator takes a small portion of the generator’s AC output and converts it to direct current (DC). The DC power is fed into the electromagnet’s secondary windings, known as exciter windings, which function similar to the stator’s primary windings. When the rotor of the generator rotates, these secondary windings create magnetic fields that cut through the lines of flux created by the stator. When the rotor cuts through these magnetic fields, it induces alternating current in the copper wire of the armature that is then passed into an external circuit and used to supply power to the house or facility.

Many generators are built with exhaust systems that help keep carbon monoxide (CO) levels low when the unit is in operation. Some also feature a CO detector that can shut the generator down before CO levels get dangerously high. In addition, most generators have gauges that display important information such as oil pressure and temperature, battery voltage, engine rotation speed and operating duration.
