Hidden among the canyons of Las Hoces del Río Duratón National Park, is one of the most beautiful towns in the entire province of Segovia, which has approximately a population of only a thousand people. We talk about Sepúlveda. Here you will find a number of wonderful museums with incredible ancient historical objects and narrow streets that will make you feel like you have just returned to the Middle Ages, but you will also be delighted to find some pretty good local restaurants and craft shops.
This small town is considered home to the largest vulture colony in Europe, which has 600 pairs of these flying creatures that live in rocky canyons, providing them with an ideal habitat for nesting. You will be able to see them fly over the city every day.
Another historical city that will surely captivate you with its beauty is Úbeda. It is one of the most famous places in Spain when it comes to Renaissance buildings that have been very well preserved within the historic city center. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site and walking through the churches, palaces, squares and buildings is like visiting a titanic open-air museum.
But the most surprising set that you can see here is the Plaza Vázquez de Molina, considered the perfect example of Renaissance urbanism. This city is only 45 minutes from Jaén if you go by car and two hours if you are in Granada. As you make your way to it, you will be able to admire one of the best olive groves in all of Europe.
To the north of the province of León, there is a wonderful town that is so quiet and simple that you will not want to leave it soon. Villafranca del Bierzo is a great place if you are looking for simplicity; no frills, just good, friendly people and wonderful food and wine, which are very cheap to start with.
The town is on the famous pilgrimage road to Santiago and there are a number of hostels available for cyclists and walkers making the pilgrimage. You should really consider taking a tour of the village in the morning, when everything seems to have been cut out of the sky. It will only take an hour to do so, so you won’t get too tired.
