Wooden ship models: how difficult is it to build?

By admin May2,2021

Wooden ship models have been around for a long time. Even during the time of the ancient Egyptians, their boat builders made wooden models that were scale models of real ships.

Discovering these ships from those times amply demonstrates that model ship building was also a hobby since time immemorial.

If you are interested in building wooden ship models, rest assured that there is no more satisfying hobby. There are two methods of building a wooden ship model. One is to build them using blueprints and the other is to buy a kit.

There are many types of wooden ship models that you can build. You could turn the easy sailboat into a slightly more difficult yacht. You could build a ship used by the ancient Vikings, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Plans are available for all types of ships: schooners, fishing boats, dhows, and even warships.

If you are fascinated by any particular ship, say a WWII USS America ship, just Google that and you can get plans for that. Some may be free, but probably not all of the time.

Wooden ship models can be built using kits or from scratch. If you are taking the second option, you have to prepare for a long time in your workshop, which can be very frustrating at times.

Let me warn you that building a wooden model ship is not that easy. Requires a bit of knowledge in woodworking and engineering. If you have that, it shouldn’t be too difficult for you. But even if you have some knowledge, but if this is your first time participating in this boat building exercise, I suggest that you get yourself a wooden model boat kit.

The difference is that in the kit you get all the pieces and you just have to put them together. You won’t need any specialized tools unlike building from scratch using a plan.

Even among the kits available there are kits for beginners, intermediate level and expert. It is recommended that you get a kit that is easier to handle with precise instructions. It’s no fun getting something that’s too difficult to build! Your love of the hobby will disappear even before you start. The first time will always be a bit difficult and confusing. But keep it up and you’ll get used to it.

After you’ve worked with the entry-level kits, you can go up the ladder by adding ships that are more elaborate and complex.
